Mother's Union

Mothers' Union, a worldwide organisation of 750,000 Anglican women and men in 60 countries committed to encouraging family life, operates at St Mark's. It was started in England in 1876 by Mary Sumner, wife of an Anglican clergyman.

In Australia it began in 1892 at Cullenswood, Tasmania, and has grown to 11,000 members nationally.

The first meeting of Mother's Union at St Mark's was held on 21 February 1962, but the branch was in recess from 1988 until September 2001 when it reformed.

Purpose

To be “specifically concerned with all that strengthens and preserves marriage and Christian family life.”

Aim

“Advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life.”

Objectives

The five Objectives are to:

• Uphold Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage and to promote its wider understanding

• Encourage parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the church

• Maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service

• Promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children

• Help those whose family life has met with adversity.

Meetings and Activities

Interested mothers are most welcome at our meetings which we hold at 7.30pm on the third Wednesday of the month, February to November inclusive, in the parish centre, Waterworks Road, adjacent to the church car-park. The program includes guest speakers presenting topics pertinent to family life.
